Math Smart Hearts!

Hello Everyone!
We have had some great math learning fun already this week!  We are focusing on addition and subtraction to 20. In honor of Valentine's Day coming up, we created a huge Smart Heart to use during a mini lesson on how facts can be related and how to show the many ways to compose and decompose 20.  We took a long rope and strung 20 little heart shaped "slinkies" (Dollar Tree) on it.  We set the rope down in a heart shape and then took turns moving the hearts from one side to the other and showing a number sentence each time. It was a good hands on visual mini lesson! Then the kids got to make their own Smart Heart using fuzzy sticks and beads.  They loved recording their own number sentences and sharing with friends!  The math talk I heard between friends was clear, precise and complete.  Great job, kiddos!! Here are a few pics!

We heart our Smart Hearts!!!

Okee Dokee!  Gotta Run!! Got to get ready for the sweetest day!!

Hello Everyone!
So sorry it's been a while since  my last post. I have been busy working on a wedding for my dear friend's son.  It is going to be beautiful!! I almost wish I would have chosen party planning as a career, but then again, I would have missed out on all this teaching fun!!
The end of February and early March are wonderful times in Texas.  We always spend a lot of time learning about our state. I decided to create a unit to go along with our already integrated reading and social studies curriculum. I wanted some math, writing and even some science, so this is what I came up with.  I do plan on adding a bit more, but we want to get started with all the learning next week, so I had to quick publish and get it ready.

a compound word activity

2 different versions of this game- one a bit more challenging

Grab a bag of beans from your pantry!! :)

As you can see there is a huge variety of activities with a western flare. You can pick and choose from over 80 pages and use what works for you!  If you are at all interested and would like a printable

I can't wait to show you how some of the hands on visuals turn out!
Well, I know this was short, but I've got a ton of decorating to do!!  Love it!!

till next time...
Thanks for taking time to take a peek!! I appreciate you!

Hello Everyone,
We finished up our study of presidents this week. We loved learning about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Throughout our studies, both important men became like friends.  We learned some amazing things about the childhood of each and some interesting little tidbits about when they were adults.  We had fun comparing the two even though they lived many years apart.  They had so many similarities and, of course, so many differences.
We loved that they each wore hats...each for different reasons, but both wore their hats with pride!
While studying Washington, we discovered that he wore a tricorn hat as did many of the soldiers of whom he was the general. Many soldiers wore little trinkets on their hats. Washington often wore a feather.
While studying Lincoln, we discovered that he stored notes and other important papers in his tall black stovepipe hat.
We, of course, had to make hats to go along with our studies. Here are some pics!

Looooove the "clean socks" addition to our brainstorming!!

Gotta run!! Very full weekend!!  Hope yours is going well. Thanks for stopping by!!

Math Thinking Patterns and CUBES strategy

$

Hello Everyone!
We have been working hard on word problems in math and using our thinking patterns (Some-Some More, Some- Some Went Away and all the organizers that go along with those) to help us solve. I love that our district supports and encourages us to teach about thinking patterns.  I did not learn this way of solving math problems when I was a kid, and always had trouble with math.  We simply learned to memorize facts. I want my students to have many many more options when working on math!
Well, I finally got around to making some mini posters as reminders for the kids as they practice trying out thinking patterns and for using the tried and true CUBES strategy as a way of getting through a word problem. C- circle the numbers, U-underline the question, B-box the key words, E- eliminate unneeded information, S- Select thinking pattern and Solve.   Today we got out the life size replicas of CUBES (you know how much I love a life sized math activity!) and the kids got small snap cubes. I decided to make them in certain colors,(Kids gotta have those rainbow colors!) and have the kids follow what the cubes said using that color marker. It really helped in organizing our thinking!
Here are some pics!

After going through the word problem together, the kids were able to practice using their CUBES and thinking patterns on some other stories. Here are a few pics of some of the Thinking Pattern Mini Posters. the entire packet includes 15 different posters.

And a pic of the CUBES mini poster:

If you think you might be able to use these, I am sharing the printable download.

I hope my kids learn to love math!  I know I am going to do my best to help them!
Til next time!
Thanks for stopping by for a peek!!

Hello Everyone!
I hope you are having a great weekend.  This week we will begin our graphing unit in math.  First graders will learn all about gathering data or surveying, organizing data and analyzing data. We will work on a couple of whole class graphs, practice graphing in math tubs and then create our own survey questions.  From those questions kids will gather their own data, and decide how to display and what to analyze. I put together a little mini unit to help me stay organized as we delve into this important skill. Here are a few pics. You may notice that there are a lot of references to Texas topics, but the unit includes open ended opportunities as well.

For your 30 page graphing unit CLICK HERE!! :)

I also wanted you to know that I have fixed typos, inaccuracies,  and added a few more math games and other fun activities to a unit I've posted before...

Now off to plan my observation lesson. Yikes!  Even after all these years, I still get a teeny bit nervous about evaluations.  Oh well, I guess that means I care about how I am doing and how my kids are learning! Right?
Till next time, thanks for stopping by for a peek!! Enjoy your week!! Stop by again soon!

Hello Everyone!
So sorry it has been a while, but this is such a busy time of year.  We have one week to go before spring break and Open House is on Thursday evening.  The kids have been working so hard on so many different things- all with a Texas twist!  They are so excited to "show off" to their families.
Last week we worked hard on graphing and I didn't get too many pics before, or during, but I snapped a couple after. We were graphing our favorite Texas animals.  We learned about taking a survey, tallying our responses, displaying data on picto, bar and pie graphs, and  analyzing and comparing. The kids are now in groups, coming up with their own survey, and developing their own way of displaying information. They will create powerpoint slides to display their info.

If you would like a quick printable to add to your graphing unit CLICK HERE!! :)

This week we are finishing our Texas unit.  My friend reminded me of a unit I had on deck using the very fun little book Armadilly Chili by Helen Ketteman.  It's a Texas style Little Red Hen story that teaches a lesson!  So cute!!  I can't wait to pull this unit out to finish up our study!
Here are a few pics from the reader's response unit!

If you are at all interested in this fun reader's response pack,
The pack is about 17 pages with a retelling puppet opportunity included.

I can't wait to have time to take pics of some of the amazing things my kids are doing.  Please stay tuned!!!  Those of you still waiting for your spring break, hang on! We can do it!!
If your spring break has come and gone, or maybe it's this week, HOORAY!!!  Hope it was or will be fantastic!
Thanks for stopping by for a peek into window on wonder!! Please let us know you were here by leaving a comment!  My kids always ask if anyone has left a message!  Till then, have a joy filled week!!!

Hello Everyone!!
My apologies for the lack of posts recently.  I finally had a second to sit down and throw some pics together of things we did the last couple of weeks.  We had open house the Thursday before Spring Break and our "theme" was Texas.  Our curriculum includes learning about the symbols and important historical elements of Texas. The kids loved learning about this amazing state and sharing what they learned with their families.  We included some research practice and expository writing along with some technology, some craft connections, some poetry, book making and so much more. Most of this is from our Texas units which you can get for free at the end of the post.  Til then, enjoy the pics!
I spy a little Texan learning about important symbols!

Hello Everyone!
And Hello April!!  Welcome spring and welcome to some eggstra special math fun!  Today we worked on comparing and ordering numbers by playing a game we called "The Best Nest." I laid out about 20 paper egg shapes and a nest on the floor. (You know how much I love a good life sized math activity!)  The objective of the game is to fill in numbers on the eggs, knowing that there are not enough eggs for each number between 10 and 100...thinking about greater and less, number order, etc. The kids took turns drawing 2 number cards.  We had to decide which number we should put in the tens place and the ones place.  Then we had to decide where to put that number on the game board. We all worked together to help the number order work to get to "The Nest"--- 100!  Now that I have totally confused you, take a peek at some of some pics.

This and several more activities are available in my new "Eggs"tra special Math packet. Here are a few pics of what is included.

Well, gotta run! My son is coming home!  Nothing like baseball to bring my guys back together!!  So excited!!  We haven't missed a Texas Ranger home opener in years!!!

I do hope you stay tuned for another post coming soon! Sandra Markle and her animal books have inspired us again!
Have a great evening and thanks for stopping b for a peek!! Don't forget to leave a comment!!

Animal Teeth and Hair and a Share!

Hello Everyone!
We have finished our study on what and how animals eat and what kinds of body covering they have. Sandra Markle has written two perfect books to help organize kids' (and teachers') thoughts on those exact subjects.

What if You Had Animal Teeth and What if You had Animal Hair have become two of my favorite books.  I posted about the teeth book last year right about this same time, and Sandra came through with the hair book just in time for our study this year!! Both books are wonderful examples of a blend of fiction and nonfiction!!  Perfect!!  After reading, discussing and comparing, I had the kids write about the kind of animal teeth they would want to have.  They created a self portrait including those teeth! They turned out so great again this year!

After reading and discussing the hair book, the kids wrote and created a similar hands on visual, with animal hair added to their self portraits.  So cute!! Including a hands on visual connection helps kids understand concepts more deeply and in their own creative way.

I wish the kids'writing would have shown up better in the pics, but I was very pleased with their thoughts and ideas!!
Doing these activities reminded me that I have some fun news to share.  A while back Scholastic Instructor magazine contacted me about this lesson.  They saw my post last year and said they wanted to include it in a section they were doing on "craftivities." Of course, I gave them permission and sent some samples.  The article came out about a month or so ago!  The editors and photographers did an amazing job!!

You can read the entire article at www.scholastic.com/instructor.  Oh!  I almost forgot!  They wanted some more fun ideas for a summer issue. So exciting!! I've had ideas included in other publications before, but Instructor always does an outstanding job with celebrating teachers and what we do for kids.  I want to support that! Thank you Scholastic/Instructor!
Anyway, if you are interested in the hands on visuals above, you can take a look at THIS FREE UNIT!! CLICK!!

Well, thanks for stopping by for a peek!  I appreciate your support!! Stay tuned for some more fun and learning!!

No Yolk! We're Talkin' Math!

Hello Everyone!
I wanted to share a quick little math activity that we did this week. I've posted about our number necklaces before and remembered how much the kids loved the idea, so I decided to create a "double Yolk Math Talk" Necklace activity.  We started with each kiddo creating an egg shape out of paper.  They each wrote a number from 10 to 120 on the egg.  We tried hard not to repeat numbers.  Then we strung a piece of yarn through each to create a necklace.  We did a couple of things incorporating our number necklaces.  The first was to see how long it took us to put ourselves in order from least to greatest. The kids did a great job! They did it in about 35 seconds!
The next activity was to play the "Double Yolk" game. I divided the kids into two groups. The first group formed a circle with each kiddo facing out. The other kids had to form an outer circle, but facing in and across from someone in the inside circle. They had a couple of minutes to compare their numbers- greatest, least, difference, closest to fifty, etc.  They had to talk to each other about their numbers.  I loved hearing the "number talk!" My principal is always reminding us that those who are doing the most talking are doing the most learning! There was a lot of learning going on!! :)

You may have already downloaded it, but I added several more things, including patterns for this activity and a subtraction game.

This week we are finishing up our animal unit with learning about animal resemblance, especially adults and babies.  Kids love baby animals and they are going to love this next little mini unit. It includes some poetry, animal baby names, sorting cards, sequencing with "Are You My Mother?," a hands on visual or two, a word search and more.
Here are a few pics from the unit.

You can get this little mini unit on animal babies if you click  HERE!!! :)
I hope you enjoy it as much as I know my littles will!!

On a personal note, my oldest son came home for a visit (nothing like the Texas Rangers Home Opener to bring him home!).  We had a great time at the game and he always takes time out from catching up with friends, to come visit my class to read to them.  Jordan is an on air journalist/reporter/anchor for an ABC station in Indiana, and his fluency and expression in reading aloud to kids is captivating!! The kids loved his visit and can't wait for him to come back!

Love all these babies!!!
Well, off to do a bit of cleaning!  My house is a wreck!! I've had other priorities lately!!  :)  Til next time, have a wonderful week, and don't forget to take a minute and let me know if you are using any of my units, how you like them, things I need to fix, add, or other thoughts you may have.  Thanks for stopping by for a peek!!
Love to all!

Math is in full "spring!"

Hello Everyone!
We are loving math lately!!  A couple of our favorite things we have done this week are our "Are You My Mother?" game and our "Scrambled Math."
Our "Are You My Mother?" game came after reading the book by PD Eastman. The object of the game was to solve math problems to create a path for the baby bird to get to his mother. The kids each got a plastic egg with a number sentence  inside.  We took turns solving the problems and placing our eggs on the 120 board until a path was created!  Kids loved it!!  Lots of math talk!!

Our second favorite thing we did so far this week is "Scramble Math." We used oversized letter tiles similar to scrabble and created words.  Adding up the points for each word provided some practice with all the addition strategies we need to keep fresh!

This game along with a ton more including an individual version of the Scramble Math are part of the packet I posted last week, but in case you missed it...

Finally I want to share what is going into my math tubs next week.  Lots of fun Spring math with a focus on comparing numbers to 120, with lots of opportunity for kids to talk math!!
Here are a few pics from the Spring Fling Packet.

If you would like to add some fun springtime math to your day,
There are six activities (28 pages) for your kids to enjoy!

I can't wait to share what we've been working on the past couple of weeks in writing!!  I am so proud of the work the kids are doing!!  So stay tuned!!!
Thanks for stopping by on this busy night. I appreciate you!! Your support keeps me sharing!!

Little Authors!!

Hello Everyone!
In my last post I said I would share some writing lessons I've done with my little firsties, but first I want to share a fun little math game we did this past week to practice comparing and ordering numbers up to 120. We pulled out our infamous life-sized 120 board (made on a shower curtain).  I found some darling little wind up chicks at the Dollar Tree and we used them to select our numbers to compare.  We wound up the chicks and let them hop hop hop until they ran out of steam and landed on a number.  The larger chick helped us phrase our comparisons.  We love to talk math!!
___ is greater than ___because __ tens/ones
 is more than __ tens/ones.

We can compare 2, 3, 4 numbers!!!

I was so pleased with how the kids were able to have fun and understand how to compare using our math language!  Way to go, kiddos!!  Can you guess what we'll be doing next week?  More practice ...   but with bunnies, instead!! Yay Dollar Tree!!

Now, on to our writing.  We have been working hard on expository writing over the past few weeks.  We started off writing to teach.  We selected something that we were "experts" at (We are all experts at something!!!), and wrote all about it to teach our readers. Having a place to do all our planning is important to my young authors.

This past week we worked on writing to teach someone "how to" do something!...How to eat Oreo Cookies!  Everyone eats them differently.  We did this same writing last year and it was very successful, so I decided to try it again!!

Of course we had to practice eating an Oreo!! We wanted out steps fresh in our minds!! :)

Brainstorming words we would need
 for our "How To" writing

Publishing and celebrating!!

Both writing units come with mini reminder posters, brainstorming sheets, planning sheets, and mini book templates for publishing!  Hope you can use them!!

Now, off to celebrate another friend's marriage!! Love is certainly in the air!!
Hope you are enjoying your weekend!!
Thanks for stopping by for a peek into our wonderful world!!
You are the best!

Hello Everyone,
Just a quick share tonight!! Synthesizing is on tap for this coming week. So is learning about landforms. I decided to integrate the two and use the delightful classic, The Little Island by Golden MacDonald to help with synthesizing. Here's what I came up with.

Stay tuned.  I'll let you know how the kids did.

Have a great week!!!

Math Fun, Synthesizing , and Baby Chicks! Oh My!

Hello Everyone!
Lots to share tonight! We have had so much "springtime learning fun" in math.  Last week I shared about a mini lesson in game form that we played on the lifesized 120 board with some wind-up chicks. Well, we got out the wind up bunnies this week.  We played a similar game yesterday, but today we shook things up a bit and included a chick and a bunny! The kids wound up the little hoppers and when each landed on two numbers, we had to first tell about greater and less than, but then we had to use different strategies to tell the difference.  It wasn't long before they realized that using the base ten model, finding the difference was easy!!  They thought they we were done with the problem after that, but noooo!  With a little hint from a fellow blogger (Pauline at Firstgradebythesea), I incorporated some movement into the scenerio!  After finding the difference, the kids had to hop or do that many jumping jacks!! Phew! One set of numbers had a difference of 41... the kids were pooped!! Here are a few pics!

You can get hopping chicks and bunnies at the Dollar Tree!! Make the 120 board on a shower curtain!! We've used ours all year!!

Now on to synthesizing.  I posted a couple of days ago about teaching kids about synthesizing while they are reading.  I introduced the concept using "The Little Island," and lots of discussion. We learned about the fact that we need to use our schema and our new thinking together to understand what our text selection is about. The kids had to take notes during the reading and then write what they thought the story was about using all of their new thinking.  They did a great job!!

We continued today with synthesis focusing on the language of synthesis. We practiced synthesizing again using another book (this time an expository text) and used the words that help us organize our thoughts.

The kids had little bookmarks with language reminders to help them during "Read to Someone" time for Daily 5.  Supporting each other was important. Practice with this skill is important. Practice makes permanent!  You can get these little visual reminders.  CLICK HERE!! :)
for your free printables.

Now, I promised the kids I would take pics of the new baby chicks that just hatched today so that moms and dads could see them.  We've been studying the life cycles of animals, finishing up this week.  We've also been waiting patiently for our school wide chick project to develop!  Tah! Dah!! Right on cue!! Happy Birthday to eight little babies!!! We love them already!!

They will be a huge inspiration when we start our poetry unit next week, I am sure!!
Well, thanks for hanging in there through this looooooong post, but I just had so much to share!!

Stay tuned, I've got some fun little math games for next week in the works!!

Thanks for stopping by for a peek!! You all are amazingly supportive!!
Have a great rest of the week!!

Hello Everyone!
Easter Blessing to all!
I hope you had a day filled with joy and hope!

This coming week we will be focusing on skip counting to and from 120. We have worked on skip counting before, but not to this extent.  Internalizing number patterns will help kids in any mental math that may come their way. We will focus on jumping off from the decade with our counting by 10's. We will work with our base 10 blocks and understand that adding rods adds 10 to what ever number you start with.  I wanted some extra work for our mini lessons and our math tubs and put together this little pack.  It has a cute little rabbit and carrot patch theme--We begin our plant unit this week too! Love some Tops and Bottoms!! Right?? :)
Here are a few pics from the 21 page pack.

As always, please let me know of any typos you detect or changes that should be made. Thanks!

Stay tuned for pics of kids playing the scamper game.  Can't wait!!
Till then, have a great rest of the day and week!
Thanks for stopping by! I appreciate you!!

A Whole Lotta Sharin' Goin' On!

Hello Everyone!!
This is my favorite time of the school year.  We are finishing up our testing, the kids have become quite independent with everything, they have become readers and writers, they have become problem solvers, I could go on and on!  I want to share some of their darling work and a couple of free units.  First off, after the big chick hatching extravaganza, I decided to have the kids write about what they would do if they had a baby chick.  From what they wrote, they would make great chick owners!  I then let them create a chick! All I gave them was a yellow circle. They turned out so cute!

The next thing I want to share is the beginning of our poetry unit.  Yes, April is poetry month, but we are getting a bit of a late start. We began by talking about what a poem is, and created a "Poetree" anchor chart. I read some different types of poem including Shel Silverstein's Poet's Tree. We talked about how sometimes a poet has fun with words and makes us really think. Shel does exactly that!!  We decided to take the subject of spring and create a simple list poem that had some flair with how we published it. They turned out so sweet!

The last thing for tonight is a new unit I just finished. In science we are studying plants for the next couple of weeks and in math we begin our study of measurement using nonstandard units. Well, put those two curriculum areas together and you get "Splat the Cat, Oopsie Daisy" by Rob Scotton.  The kids looooove Splat, so I decided to use that little guy as our inspiration all next week. this little unit contains cross curricular learning opportunities.  Here's a peek!

These are just a few of the over 60 pages in the unit!  I hope you can use at least a few of them.  You have to go get that sweet book if you don't have it yet.  I found some at Target, but of course you can always get on Amazon or go to your favorite bookstore.

If you are interested in the unit, don't wait,
Well, that's all I've got for tonight!! Thanks for stopping by for another peek!!  Hope you can swing by again soon to check out what we're up to!!!  Now off to get my math tubs ready for next week! Can't wait!!
Talk to you all soon!

Hello Everyone!!
What a great weekend!  Lots of house cleaning, and yard work!  Phew! I'm pooped!! But I did have a bit of energy left to create a quick little supplemental unit for writing "Friendly Letters." I know letter writing has basically gone extinct, but we still believe that it is a great way for people to personally show interest in others.  First grade is not too early to teach kids the proper way to write a friendly letter.  This is, in fact, a great time of year to do exactly that. There are a ton of people around them who would love to receive a letter from a first grader!! Writing letters to show ideas in chronological order or logical sequence and use of appropriate conventions is a supporting standard in our district's writing curriculum. I love that!!
Here are a few pics from this 12 page unit.

The unit also includes some letter writing templates.

I can't wait to have my kids get busy sharing their messages with those they love!!

As always, thanks for stopping by for a peek!
You are the best!!
Let me know if you spot any typos or
inaccuracies in any of my docs!
Have a great rest of your weekend!!

Hello Everyone!
Just a quick share tonight.  Next week we finish up our plant unit and our unit on measurement in math.  We are having so much fun with Splat the Cat Oopsie Daisy this week, but I can't wait to introduce one of my favorite plant books to the kids. Tops and Bottoms by Janet Stevens is such a fabulously engaging book, I almost wish we had more time to spend on it!!  I put together a fun little unit that covers some ELA, some math, and a bit of science to supplement our plant unit. Here are a few pics.

I can't wait to show you some of the wonderful poems the kids are writing this week, and out little Splats.   Thanks for stopping by to take a peek!!

Hello Everyone!
I hope you are having a great weekend.  I don't know about you, but the end of the year is approaching waaaaay to quickly!  I still have so much I want to do with my kiddos. I don't want the year to end yet!!!

We had fun celebrating poetry and Shel Silverstein this past week. After reading "Lazy Jane" by Shel, we wrote our own concrete poems about water.  To publish we wrote our poems on a raindrop shape, and laminated them to look like real raindrops.

After getting inspired by Shel's poem "Tired" we wrote our own list poems about what makes us tired.
We published them by writing them on a sweet little sleeping bag with our faces peeking out.
Our Brainstorm anchor

Then we enjoyed the inspiration of Shel's poems "Ouch" and "Bandaids" and wrote our own poems about times when we say, "Ouch!" We had fun with bandaids as well!!!

Our Brainstorm anchor

I'm telling you, we have some poets and we didn't know it!!  Thank you Shel Silverstein for inspiring us to discover our inner poets!!! :)

This coming week we will be celebrating mom by presenting our musical on Thursday night!!  The kids have worked so hard and are so excited!! I am too!!  We will also be celebrating mom by writing a sweet book just about and for her!!  If you are a mom, you know there is nothing like a thoughtful piece of writing by your little sweetie to make Mother's Day so special.   We will be incorporating the use of similes to create our books.

For your free Mother's Day Simile book printable CLICK HERE!!

There are about 12 different simile pages for the kids to write and illustrate. We will bind them and add some pizzazz to the cover.  We love celebrating our moms!!

Well, Gotta Run!!  Off to watch our Dallas Mavericks beat the Spurs! Go Mavs!!
Have a wonderful rest of the weekend!  We love your support of this little blog.
Thanks for stopping by for a peek!!
 These kiddos are amazing!!
They love sharing their work with you!
